The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) was established in November 1993 as an autonomous society under the Ministry of Earth Sciences in India. NIOT is managed by a Governing Council and is headed by a director. The institute is based in Chennai.
The major aim of starting NIOT was to develop reliable indigenous technologies to solve various engineering problems associated with harvesting of non-living and living resources in India’s exclusive economic zone, which is about two-thirds of the land area of India.

Salary :-
- Scientist – F – Pay Level 13A (Rs. 131100 – 216600) and allowances as admissible under 7th CPC
- Scientific Assistant – Pay Level 06 (Rs.35400-112400) and allowances as admissible under 7th CPC
- Scientific Assistant – Pay Level 06 (Rs.35400-112400) and allowances as admissible under 7th CPC
- Technician Grade – A – Pay Level 02 (Rs.19900 – 63200) and allowances as admissible under 7th CPC
- Junior Translation Officer – Pay Level 06 (Rs.35400-112400) and allowances as admissible under 7th CPC
Qualification :-
Scientist – F (Mechanical):
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Technology from a recognized University with at least First Class (60% marks) in the qualifying degree level. Sixteen years experience in Research and Development, Survey, Planning, Administration, Supervision or training, etc., in any of the field of the areas of technology or engineering.
Scientific Assistant (Mechanical):
- Three (03) years of Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (with 60% marks) or its equivalent qualifications from a recognized Board or University. Basic knowledge of computer.
Scientific Assistant (Electronics & Communication):
- Three (03) years of Diploma in Electronics & Communication Engineering (with 60% marks) or its equivalent qualifications from a recognized Board or University. Basic knowledge of computer.
Technician:
- 10th Class Pass (Secondary / Metric) of a recognized Board and ITI course approved by National Council for Vocational Training or equivalent from recognized Institutions. Basic knowledge of computer.
Junior Translation Officer:
- Master’s degree of a recognized University in Hindi with English as a compulsory or elective subject or as the medium of examination at the degree level. (OR) Master’s degree of a recognized University in English with Hindi as a compulsory or elective subject or as the medium of examination at the degree level. (OR)
- Masters degree of a recognized University in any subject other than English or Hindi, with Hindi medium and English as a compulsory or elective subject or as the medium of examination at the degree level. (OR) Master’s degree of a recognized University in any subject other than Hindi or English with English medium and Hindi as a compulsory or elective subject or as the medium of examination at the degree level. (OR)
- Master’s degree of a recognized University in any subject other than Hindi or English, with Hindi and English as a compulsory or elective subjects or either of the two as medium of examination and other as a compulsory or elective subject at degree level. AND Recognized Diploma or Certificate course in translation from Hindi to English & vice versa or two years experience of translation work from Hindi to English and vice versa in Central or State Government Office’s including Government of India undertaking.

Selection Process :-
- The selection process will be based on Written and Interview.
- The preliminary screening of the applications will be based on candidate’s qualifying credentials.
- The prescribed essential qualifications are minimum requirements and the mere possession of the same does not entitle candidates to be called for written / typing test. If the number of applications received in response to advertisement is large, it will not be convenient or possible to call all candidates for written / typing test. Hence, the Institute may restrict the number of candidates to be called for Test to the reasonable limit through Short listing Process by adopting suitable criteria, like percentage of marks in Essential Qualifications as indicated by them in their application.
- In such case, Candidates will be shortlisted roughly in the ratio of 1:50, subject to availability of sufficient number of eligible candidates.
